"GETS IS GAY! GB"
--Chicago White Sox second baseman Gordon Beckham apologized Saturday for scratching an inappropriate remark in the infield dirt directed at Royals second baseman Chirs Getz, a former teammate and a friend.
"They looking to take ya down at all times no matter how positive and what you do! It's always a way they try to get ya. I'm standing tall."
-- Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson defending himself on Twitter after using homophobic slurs on the radio, five months after appearing on "The View" to support a 13-year-old boy who had been attacked by classmates,
"Because civil unions promote an unacceptable lifestyle, undermine the faith of the Church on holy matrimony, and cause scandal and confusion, Catholics may not participate in civil unions. To do so is a very grave violation of the moral law and, thus, seriously sinful. A civil union can never be accepted as a legitimate alternative to matrimony."
-- Rhode Island Bishop Thomas Tobin warning the state's Catholics that they can't get a civil union like a common homosexual
"If the president believes that gays, lesbians and transsexuals are "our brothers and sisters," why does he not also believe that "our brothers and sisters" include not only polygamists, but exhibitionists, the incestuous, coprophiliacs, necrophiliacs, urophiliacs and zoophiliacs (those who have sex with animals who are unable - or unwilling - to run away)? ... Such presidential pandering to deadly-disease spreaders is surely a despicable means of trying to attract votes by an incumbent who will apparently do anything to try to win re-election."
-- World Net Daily's White House correspondent, Les Kinsolving, in a blatant display of raw bigotry and ignorance. This hateful spewing is so horrendous because it's so casual. When future history books are written these paragraphs will be included as a graphic reminder of the blatant loathing that used to be publicly acceptable and common before civilization advanced. By then, hopefully, Mr. Kinsolving's kin will have evolved past the mouth breather stage.
"To say that I would use the gay community to sell records is probably one of the most ridiculous statements anyone can make about me as a person. I would say the top thing I think about every single day of my life, other than my fans, loving the music, and my family being healthy, is social justice and equality."
- Lady Gaga, in a new cover story from The Advocate, addressing concerns that she's using the LGBT community to make money.
"Marriage never has been or will be an equal-opportunity institution. As the United States gradually makes the membership rules to marriage gender-inclusive, it risks deepening our sharp class and race disparities in marriage and family life. If we wish to avoid this fate, we should not be celebrating the benefits of marriage. Instead we need to develop family policies that give greater recognition and resources to the growing array of families formed."
- Judith Stacy, a sociology professor at New York University, writing about the flaws of conservative and liberal perspectives on marriage equality, in "Unequal Opportunity," a segment of The New York Times' special feature "Marriage: The Next Chapter."
"You are adamant that you are a special gender, That is why some of you have spent considerable money on special operations. Every year you all look very different. Blonde hair, glossy lipstick sporting Gucci handbags and us men continue to be taken in by your looks. It is only your thick muscular carves, bulked up after years of playing rugby, that give you away."
"But it is not your will that you are the way you are. You are just another shining example of the glorious miracles and creations of our Lord. I applaud you on your charity work in our communities and may you continue to pursue it. I also applaud you on your pursuit of your human rights and I encourage you to be vocal on any issue that touches, encroaches on your rights. This also goes out to the faafatama (lesbian) community in our country."
"My only advice is. Be good citizens and stay home and look after your families. Don't roam around at night."
-- Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi speaking at the opening of a government transgender community center. The Prime Minister is known for his humor.
"The bill put forth by the legislature would create onerous and discriminatory hurdles for same-sex couples that no other state has ever put in place. As a result, we ask you to veto the bill should it come to your desk in its present form."
-- From a letter sent to Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee about the recently passed legislation to allow civil unions for gays and lesbians. The bill passed the state senate on Wednesday. The list of the signers include: Marriage Equality Rhode Island, Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, The Human Rights Campaign, Freedom to Marry, The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, National Center for Lesbian Rights, The Family Equality Council, as well as The American Civil Liberties Union. Fourteen legislators also sent a similar letter.
"It was here, in the East Room, at our first Pride reception, on the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, a few months after I took office, that I made a pledge, I made a commitment. I said that I would never counsel patience; it wasn't right for me to tell you to be patient any more than it was right for folks to tell African Americans to be patient in terms of their freedoms. I said it might take time to get everything we wanted done. But I also expected to be judged not by the promises I made, but the promises I kept. ... Bottom line is, I've met my commitments to the LGBT community. I have delivered on what I promised. Now, that doesn't mean our work is done. There are going to be times where you're still frustrated with me. I know there are going to be times where you're still frustrated at the pace of change. I understand that. I know I can count on you to let me know. This is not a shy group."
- President Obama, speaking at the LGBT Pride Reception at the White House last night.
